Now that we've survived the Motherfucker 4th Anniversary kick off, Summer '04 is shaping up to be a particularly intense party season with special events popping up all over town.
Jasper Coolidge (www.jenyk.com) and Melody Nelson (www.melodynelson.com) are now hosting their always edgy indie rock Vicious shows every second Tuesday at Rothko. Also at that venue are the Saturday night Crashin' In (www.crashinin.com) parties where you'll see the likes of The Soft Explosions, Chinese Stars, Bling Kong, Dirty On Purpose, The Break-Up and many more this Summer. Friday nights Plaid is the place in the East Village for Between (A Rock and A Hard Place) hosted by NY Underbelly (www.newyorkunderbelly.com) and 747 (www.7forty7.com). Contact them to get on the list for free early admission and open bar. Featured are celeb DJs and some of the hottest bands around with recent shows by Wheatus, The Fashion, Dirtbike Annie and The Drive. And speaking of parties, you don't want to miss KerriBlack's Big Birthday Bash at Sin-é on June 11. The heavy duty line-up of The Danglers, The Fashion, Scout and Billionaire Boys Club help celebrate. More details at www.kerriblackpromotions.com.  Don't forget to keep on top of the latest by checking in with NEON's SunUp2SunDown event picks updated every week. Link to it from our cover.

Band Buzzz: Schizo Fun Addict has signed on with indie Modern Records to release their latest, The Atom Spark Hotel. The eclectic group’s previous two were UK only releases and caused quite a stir across the pond. Look for a mid-Summer debut … Clara Venus who meld introspective lyrics with dynamic rhythms (ala The Replacements) also have a full-length due out that you should watch for … Just finishing up their second Euro tour, The Chinese Stars' new CD is set to premier momentarily … The Compulsions play nitty gritty New York blues. Featuring singer/guitarist Rob Carlyle and a rotating cast of characters that have included the legendary Howlin’ Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin and Richard Fortus (Guns N’ Roses, Psychedelic Furs), you can usually find the band holding forth Tuesday nights at The Lakeside Lounge. The teaser we’ve heard for their new album is dripping with hot licks and soulful grooves … Meanwhile, power popsters with an edge Orange Park are busy laying down the tracks for a new full length. Look for them to rip the roof off Pianos in late July as they gear up for an extended visit to their fanatic followers in Japan come September … The Minors have been looking to add a second guitarist so Ben Carroll can rock out on percussion. We caught their recent hot set at the Mercury Lounge where they premiered cuts from their new one Not So Shy … Yep, that was AeroVox’s “So Faraway” you heard on the soundtrack of John Gallagher’s latest Cupidity at this year’s NY Independent Film and Video Festival. The award-winning Gallagher also directed the critically acclaimed The Deli and Blue MoonThe Break-Up have headed out to the Left Coast for a bunch of summer shows in L.A. and San Fran. Look for a review of their latest CD She Went Black in this issue.

The Devil Cats at Between (A Rock and A Hard Place) night at Plaid on the evening their mockumentry of the same name was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. Sydney (Hellena Handbasket), seen far right on bass, is Oscar winner Sidney Poitier's daughter. Her sister Anika  directed and played a lead role also.

Serving 'em up at the always happening Luna Lounge are Paul Widdowson and Suli Holum. Between Paul's quick wit and Suli's winning smile (and other attributes) you always get a bonus with your beverage.
